The Czech Republic celebrated its National Day at EXPO 2025 Osaka with a rich programme of culture, ceremony, and innovation, led by President Petr Pavel and held in the presence of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado.
The date, 24 July, was chosen to honour the 165th birthday of Czech artist Alfons Mucha, whose work partly inspired the design of the Czech Pavilion. The pavilion itself, created by Apropos Architects, features a striking spiral form made of wood and glass, representing Czechia’s commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles.
The official ceremony took place in the EXPO’s National Day Hall and included a joint performance of national anthems, a flag-raising, and speeches from President Pavel and Japanese representatives.
In his address, President Pavel said: “Today is not just a celebration of Czech culture, but a celebration of partnership. Our shared future depends on collaboration, and EXPO 2025 provides the ideal platform for that.”
Central to the celebrations was a performance of THE STRINGS, a specially commissioned piece combining music, movement, and voice.
The show brought together artists from the Czech Philharmonic (chamber ensemble), contemporary circus troupe Cirk La Putyka, the Czech Radio Children’s Choir, and pop singer Aiko. Two performances were staged during the day – one for official delegates and one for the general public.
Visitors also had the opportunity to view the original manuscript of Gregor Johann Mendel, the founder of modern genetics, on display inside the pavilion on 23 and 24 July.
Outside, a convoy of historic Czech cars having completed a 14,200 km journey from Prague to Osaka was showcased near Festival Station.
The pavilion’s restaurant paid homage to Czechia’s participation in EXPO 1970 (also held in Osaka) with a special celebratory menu featuring buckwheat tartare, duck breast with chestnut purée, and plum-sauce pancakes.
The Czech Pavilion is one of more than 150 national exhibits at EXPO 2025 Osaka, which runs from 13 April to 13 October under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”
The event is expected to draw over 28m visitors during its six-month run, offering a global platform for collaboration, innovation, and cultural exchange.
