Messukeskus (Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre) has signed a new energy efficiency agreement running from 2026 to 2035, committing to cut energy consumption by 10% from 2024 levels.
The move supports the venue’s target of becoming fully carbon-neutral by 2030. The centre has participated in energy efficiency agreements since 2008.
Solar panels on the venue’s roof currently generate 533 MWh annually – enough to power 168 two-bedroom flats. The site also uses geothermal heating, district cooling, heat recovery systems, and motion-sensor LED lighting.
The venue’s recycling rate reached 24% in the first half of 2025. Almost all event materials and structures are reused, with eco-points in halls allowing waste sorting for paper, cardboard, biowaste, glass, and metal.
Sustainability manager Hanne Lindroos said: “We want to offer our customers events with a smaller carbon footprint. Energy efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand. We train our staff in energy-efficient thinking and report regularly on our energy consumption. For us, sustainability is about concrete action.”
The centre holds ISO 14001 certification and is a climate partner with the City of Helsinki. It is also committed to the Glasgow Climate Declaration and holds the Sustainable Travel Finland label.
The Holiday Inn Helsinki – Expo, located at the venue, is the first Holiday Inn globally to hold the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Restaurant services operated by NoHo Partners received the EcoCompass environmental certificate in 2024.
In 2024, the venue generated £245m in income for the Helsinki region and supported 3,335 person-years of employment through exhibition activities.
