Four World Expo pavilions realised by NUSSLI win BIE Awards in Osaka

The World Expo in Osaka has closed, having presented a full showcase of nations over a six-month period in Japan.

Thurgau-based Swiss company NUSSLI, which was responsible for the construction of five national pavilions, has won a series of BIE Awards in a selection of categories. In addition to the Swiss pavilion, NUSSLI also realised the pavilions for Austria, Uzbekistan, Brazil and Kuwait. Four of the five pavilions won awards.

Under the motto ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’, the World Expo 2025 in Osaka was all about innovation, sustainability and international exchange.

The winners of the Official Participant Awards were selected by an international jury of experts who visited each international pavilion at the Expo during two sessions in May and October 2025.

Jurors picked out NUSSLI’s work on the Uzbekistan pavilion, which was awarded gold for Thematic Development. The Brazilian pavilion also impressed the jury and was awarded silver in the Thematic Development (modular pavilions) category. The Swiss pavilion was awarded bronze in the Architecture & Landscape category, while the Austrian pavilion received bronze for Exhibition Design.

“With the projects in Osaka, we were once again able to show that temporary structures have a lasting impact – technically, architecturally and emotionally. We will take this experience into the next Expos with great motivation,” said Andy Böckli, CEO of NUSSLI.

NUSSLI  is  already  looking  ahead and making strategic preparations for the Specialized Expo 2027 in Belgrade and the World Expo 2030 in Riyadh.

A total of 158 countries and regions, as well as seven international organisations, took part in the Osaka World Expo, with visitor numbers topping 25m.

Japan’s Crown Prince Akishino spoke at the Osaka closing ceremony for World Expo 2025, saying he hoped the world continued with the Expo’s theme of ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’. He said: “I believe that it is of profound significance that the Expo has offered opportunities that have brought together large numbers of people here on Yumeshima to forge links and deepen mutual understanding, and to ponder together solutions to the common issues that confront humanity.”
