After collapse in government events, Shenyang EXPO turns global

n 2024, Shenyang New World EXPO saw a huge 40% drop in government-led events. Newly-appointed GM John Chan is bringing a new policy to the fold – targeting international business.

“In recent years,” he explained, “the domestic economy has encountered numerous challenges, particularly due to a continuously sluggish real estate market that has caused funding shortages in related supply chains, reduced investment enthusiasm among businesses, and weakened consumer confidence, all of which have negatively impacted the overall economic environment.”

As a result of budget cuts, Chan said, many companies have reduced their exhibition plans, with some even cancelling specific events. This has made convention and exhibition projects far less extensive and influential than they used to be.

Consequently, the industry’s growth has noticeably slowed. Many small and medium-sized convention and exhibition enterprises are struggling to survive in this increasingly competitive environment.

China – opening up to the outside world?

China continues to expand its high-level opening-up to the outside world, Chan said. He argued that the connections between China and the rest of the world are becoming increasingly strong, leading to a rise in cross-border cooperation and exchanges.

Shenyang, a northeast Chinese city long-known for its industrial base, is actively striving to establish itself as an international hub in Northeast Asia.

Chan noted that local governments are increasingly recognising the importance of the convention and exhibition industry: It serves as a catalyst for regional economic development, provides significant social benefits, enhances a city’s visibility and influence, and promotes cultural exchange and integration.

EXPO’s pitch to international organisers

With 24,000 sqm of exhibition space, a prime CBD location, and easy access to the airport and high-speed rail, EXPO is making a strong case as a host for international events.

Chan said management was focusing on “tailored, high-efficiency service,” and highlighted the venue’s links with the New World Shenyang Hotel and K11 Art Mall as part of a broader business ecosystem.

Shenyang New World EXPO is shifting strategy – away from government dependency and toward global business. With a need to find an alternative to government-led events, the venue is betting big on cross-border partnerships.
