Helsinki Design Week reveals Suomitalo as 2025 main venue

Art Nouveau building Suomitalo will be the main venue of Helsinki Design Week, 5–14 September 2025.

The 2025 edition marks the festival’s 20th anniversary. The main exhibition, Designing Happiness, will be hosted at Suomitalo alongside a ten-day programme of talks, launches and social events.

Suomitalo was completed in 1911 and is currently owned by a fund managed by German asset manager DWS and operated by Newsec. It is built from Kökar red granite and features façades by architect Armas Lindgren and floorplans by Onni Tarjanne.

The Helsinki Design Week team says the venue reflects the festival’s values in its anniversary year. “It’s a great opportunity to reflect on what kind of Finland we are building,” said founder Kari Korkman.

The Designing Happiness exhibition will explore the role of design and architecture in personal and collective well-being. Curator Anniina Koivu says the exhibition looks at happiness “from fireworks and balloons to community living and everyday life.”

Each year, Helsinki Design Week selects a building that offers a new perspective on the city. After this year’s festival, Suomitalo will undergo renovation. Newsec plans to develop it into a premium office space.

“Designing spaces that support corporate culture is key for the future of Finnish office work,” said Newsec’s Jussi Kivitie. “Helsinki Design Week is a fitting partner.”

ONE Architects and A-Insinöörit are development partners for the refurbishment. CBRE Finland is supporting the repositioning of the building.
