SXSW pulls plug on Sydney event

SXSW Sydney will not return in 2026. Organisers confirmed the 2025 edition was its last, ending the Asia-Pacific expansion of SXSW after three years.

SXSW Sydney launched in 2023 under a five-year agreement with the NSW Government – the final event ran in October of last year.

In a statement, organisers cited “a changing global environment” and “prevailing market conditions”. They said these factors meant the Sydney edition would not proceed.

“The decision reflects a changing global environment that is impacting major events, festivals and cultural programs worldwide,” the statement said.

SXSW Sydney said it worked with the NSW Government and its global owners, Penske Media Corporation, to explore options before closing the event.

Strong attendance didn’t translate to long-term viability

Despite the closure, SXSW Sydney reported strong headline numbers.

Organisers said the 2025 edition attracted more than 345,000 attendees. This represented a 15% year-on-year increase.

Across three years, SXSW Sydney said it generated an estimated $276m in total economic impact. It also reported more than 63,000 out-of-region attendees and 35% growth in international visitation between 2024 and 2025.

However, certain industry sources have reported that the event struggled in a tight market. Sponsorship budgets were under pressure and competition was high.

Market pressures were too much?

SXSW Sydney operated in a crowded calendar. It competed with established conferences and ran during the media upfronts season, a busy period for agencies and brands.

Industry rumours have suggested a future Asia-Pacific SXSW could move to Singapore. No such plans have been confirmed.

What SXSW said

Jenny Connelly, director in charge of SXSW, said the Sydney edition delivered value despite its short run.

“SXSW Sydney represented an ambitious and meaningful extension of the SXSW brand,” she said.

“While the event will not proceed in 2026, we are grateful for the collaboration, creativity, and commitment that defined SXSW Sydney.”

Co-managing directors Simon Cahill and Jono Whyman said organisers would support staff affected by the closure.

SXSW continues to operate in Austin and London. The second SXSW London will run from 1–6 June 2026.
